What are good old fashioned maps in CS2?

The short answer is yes. This map has many advantages and only a few disadvantages. Let’s start with the benefits:

  • Simple structure with three paths.
  • Encourages fast, aggressive play, with action starting from the first second of the round.
  • Easy to get started, most Nades are intuitively clear.
  • High skill ceiling for individual and team play.
  • A successful combination of open and closed spaces, long corridors and narrow and compact rooms.

One of the main advantages of ancient is that even without a coordinated team or hundreds of hours of practice, it is still fun to play. One reason, perhaps the most important, is the center of the map.

Controlling the center gives both teams a significant advantage, making it easy to attack the enemy’s back or split both sites to plant C4. If you add to this the ability to throw a grenade into the center of the map without taking a single step from the start of the round, you get a very explosive combination. The battle for the middle at the ancient start in the first seconds of the round, and the team that wins this battle often wins the round.

The downside – the weakness of the map. We have identified three disappointing features of the map:

  • Too much green. Some map elements are painted in other colors, such as red, but most of the surface is rock and greenery. Firstly, it looks a bit boring. Second, the green agent blends into the wall.
  • Optimization. The map is still quite heavy. It performed worse in terms of frames per second compared to Dust 2, Mirage, and the now-retired Vertigo, and only slightly better than Inferno.
  • The attacking side starts in the water. Seriously, how could this happen? It’s like wet socks with wet shoes. Brrr, all competitive spirit is gone.

Another controversial feature of this map is the large number of corners. The attacking side’s movement is hindered by the number of places that need to be checked to advance. However, this can also be seen as a positive. This feature encourages the defense to act more actively rather than camping on site.

Which side has the advantage on ancient?

At the professional level, ancient is the most balanced battlefield in the game. The win rate between attack and defense is evenly split, with a slight advantage towards the attacker side – about half a percentage point.

In regular matchmaking, the situation is a little different. The attacking side in Ancient has a distinct advantage, although not a huge one. According to statistics from various sources, in matchmaking, the raid wins 51-52% of rounds on ancient. It cannot be called a decisive advantage, but it is there.

Which map is the best in CS2?

Of course, it’s what you enjoy the most. But if we rely on cold statistics, the battle for first place is between ancient and dust 2. Both maps are popular at all levels of play, are balanced, and allow for individual play and team maneuvers.

In matchmaking, regardless of the platform, there is no way you can only play one map. So, it’s better to learn the basics and most useful tactics on popular maps, such as Mirage. We even have an excellent guide on Mirage Nades, which will ultimately help you get a positive win rate on that map. Be sure to check it out!
